Well before this territory was ever called the Fraser Valley, it was known by its Halq’eméylem name, S’ólh Téméxw, meaning “our land” or “our world.”

For us, that name serves as a reminder that our organization stems from a lineage of settlers and visitors to this area, the traditional, ancestral land that was first home to the Stó:lō, Nlaka’pamux, Sts’ailes and St’at’imc Peoples.

As settlers and visitors, we therefore acknowledge our duty to treat this land and its first people with the utmost respect and gratitude. When you visit, we hope you’ll show that same respect and encourage those who come after you to do likewise.

The Fraser Valley is (and has always been) filled with Indigenous voices, history and heritage. As we continue to encourage both locals and visitors to connect with the land, nature, and culture here, we look to our Indigenous community, and its elders, for how to do this respectfully and honourably.  

We’ll soon be recognizing the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (September 30) once more, so we wanted to assemble a list of local experiences that highlight Indigenous artists, stories, and traditions that you can support any time of year. We highly recommend visiting these spots to renew your sense of place and get a refresher of how lucky we all are to be on the unceded lands of Indigenous peoples.

Trethewey House: The River People and the Land: Living within S’ólh Téméxw exhibition – Abbotsford

Home to a new permanent exhibit about the strength and history of the Stó:lō people, the engaging presentations here seek to give ownership of the home’s beautiful grounds back to those who first lived in the area.

Hosting a rotating calendar of workshops and exhibits led by Indigenous artists, The Reach preserves and shares the stories of Abbotsford’s rich and diverse cultural heritage while showcasing work from voices both inside and outside the community. The current exhibit, Parallax(e): Perspectives on the Canada–U.S. Border, features an impressive roster of contemporary Indigenous artists, exploring the true identity of two stretching land masses that may be separated by name and politics, but are forever connected through history, nature and people.

Section 35 – Chilliwack

Founded in 2014 by Justin Jacob Louis of the Samson Cree Nation, this streetwear brand has quickly gained international acclaim with its stylish designs featured in Vogue and the Metropolitan Museum of New York.

Offering stunning art pieces and incredible handmade and hand-carved goods by local craftspeople, you’ll find all kinds of ways to spruce up your home here.

With just a few weeks left, we’ve highlighted our must-visit experiences, perfect for every family member in your crew, from the cannonballers to the toe-dippers. These unforgettable adventures, all less than an hour from Vancouver, offer the best of Canadian summer: fresh air, friendly service, and stunning natural beauty.

The sun is setting on summer 2025, so let’s make use of the year’s longest days and send the season off with a splash! 

1. Abbotsford

You’re always among friends in Abbotsford (furry or otherwise)! The sweeping rural scenes of this Valley gem are the perfect primer for getting out into the wide-open spaces we’re known for: a refreshing change of pace from the urban sprawl you might be used to.

You’ll get a great feel for country living when you stop by EcoFarm, a working dairy farm where you can meet the cows, learn about farm life, and try fresh ice cream made right onsite! On the farm tour, you’ll get a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at how milk is cultivated and used to create some of our favourite treats.

No matter which direction you’re coming from, a snack stop is always a must, and there’s no better place to stock up than at Clayburn Village Store and Tea Shop. Opened in 1912, this vintage candy shop located in Clayburn Village consistently ranks as one of visitors’ favourite new discoveries in Abbotsford. It’s got everything you need to make your journey a little bit sweeter!

If the temperature starts climbing and you need a refresh, head to Mill Lake’s Spray Park. The water is on from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. until the September long weekend, giving you plenty of time to watch the little ones get soaked, dry off, and do it all over again.

When you’re feeling a bit peckish, we recommend a visit to Little Sprout Café. Specializing in hearty and nutritious fare, the café is known for using fresh, local ingredients and even grows its microgreens in-house! It’s a true community hub that prioritizes inclusivity in its hiring practices, so expect to meet friendly, diversely-abled team members.After a full day of exploring, chances are you might be completely wiped out, so why not stay the night?

Abbotsford has plenty of cozy accommodation options for whatever you need; from family campsites to boutique bed and breakfasts. The road trip can always continue in the morning!

2. Chilliwack

You can always count on Chilliwack for an escape from the ordinary! This character-filled community is chock-full of opportunities for adventure, so you have no reason to stay at home!

One of the most famous local attractions is, of course, Cultus Lake Waterpark. As the biggest waterpark in British Columbia, it’s a top spot to cool off in Metro Vancouver, with everything from waterslides to spray parks and splash pads. If you’re looking to keep dry but still get the adrenaline pumping, there is also Cultus Lake Adventure Park just across the street! Home to all kinds of exhilarating rides and an epic mini golf course, this is an incredible theme park that you won’t need to book a flight for.

But if it’s culture you crave, take a wander through Downtown Chilliwack and check out the vibrant murals. Created as part of the Chilliwack Mural Festival, each public piece reveals a different side of the city! This year’s fest runs from August 7 to 17, giving you the chance to watch vibrant murals come to life. Don’t miss the Street Party on August 15 & 16,  packed with live art, musical performances, food trucks, local vendors, and more! 

Ready to see some of the area’s majestic wildlife? Make your next stop the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve. Home to countless winged beauties, it’s a must-visit for curious little ones and nature lovers alike. Stroll along the boardwalk to spot herons—and many other species—then head up the lookout tower for a stunning 360-degree view of the wetlands. Note: the Centre Trail Bridge has been blocked off for public safety. Additionally, the Heron Reserve is only available from the Vedder Rotary trail, so be sure to plan your time and route accordingly! Visit their website for more information.

When it’s time for breakfast, brunch, or lunch, head to Little Beetle. This stylish bistro is known for warm service and a menu full of crowd-pleasers. From pancakes and bennies to burgers and daily soups, it’s so much more than a place to refuel. Generous portions mean you’ll likely have a snack for later, too!

There’s a lot to discover in Chilliwack, so why not make it a full-day (or multi-day) adventure? Book a stay in one of the area’s welcoming hotels or guesthouses to experience local life from sunrise to golden hour.

3. Harrison River Valley

With crisp air rolling in from both the Harrison River and Harrison Lake, this waterside community offers a refreshing destination on any summer day.

At Kilby Provincial Park, you can lounge beachside and recharge, or push off in a kayak to explore the water. Keep your eyes peeled for anything that looks mysterious, though…Harrison is B.C.’s Sasquatch sighting capital!) Just a few minutes’ walk to the Kilby Historic Site, the park is filled with new things to discover, and also offers beautiful campsites for overnight stays, just be sure to check availability before you go.

If travelling by car has you craving something more open-air, call one of Harrison’s most unique rental businesses: Harrison Hot Wheels. Cruise around town in multi-seat pedal carts with 3–4 wheels, perfect for getting everyone in on the action. You’re already out seeking new experiences…why not cross off another one while you’re at it?

Heading out in late August? Circle August 30 on your calendar…that’s when Bands on the Beach takes over! This outdoor music fest lets you rock out with a twinkling lake as the backdrop. Expect a diverse lineup of local musicians and plenty of food trucks fueling the fun.

When meal time rolls around, you can never go wrong with River’s Edge Clubhouse Restaurant. Part of the Sandpiper Resort, this local favourite is perfect for golfers, nature-seekers, or anyone looking to make a meal special. Stop in for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, with a menu full of elevated staples and an always reliable kids’ menu.

Your itinerary is plenty full by this point, so maybe leave planning the trip home til tomorrow. Check into any of the nearby accommodations in Harrison and resume your journey rested and rejuvenated. Plus, it’s another excuse to restock on road snacks before you head out!

A sunny day in Abbotsford is a surefire way for the kids to form new core memories while you dig into your own summer nostalgia. At Silverbrook U-Catch Trout Farm, little ones can try their hand at fishing at a local trout farm. For something with a bit more momentum, we recommend hiking and mountain biking in Sumas Mountain Regional Park. The 1,471-hectare park is full of breezy trails and sweeping views, which you can set up as an incredible reward for all their impressive pedalling!

Then, to switch up the pace a bit, The Reach Gallery Museum is an excellent option for your arts and culture. Stop in and admire the engaging exhibits of local artists and learn about  Abbotsford’s rich and diverse cultural heritage with programming curated for all ages.

Phew! It’s been a long day of exploring, and Abbotsford still has so much to see, so there’s always the option to stay over. The kids can choose from freshly made muffins, cinnamon buns and scones, or you can always roll up your sleeves and visit the berry picking area and fill up a basket for your next baking project together. Plus, there are friendly farm animals to meet and a dedicated adventure zone where you can watch them play while enjoying an iced coffee.

Now that you’ve stocked up on snacks, you’re ready for the nearby nature outings, like a tour of Chilliwack Lake Provincial Park. You’ll find all kinds of exhilarating ways to appreciate nature here— camping, kayaking, fishing, and over 40 km of walking and hiking trails (including all levels of difficulty for little feet). Heads up though— there is no cell service in this area, so be sure to tell someone ahead of time where you’re going!

If you prefer fresh air with an added dose of adrenaline, Chilliwack River Rafting will definitely be your speed. Another great option for families, the company has accessible and beginner-level routes that will give kids a new perspective on the outdoors. The stunning views are one of a kind, especially with an audience of curious mountain goats looking down from the surrounding cliff faces!

After any of those day trips, you’ll likely be ready for a few modern comforts, which is where District 1881, in Downtown Chilliwack, comes in. In the heart of Chilliwack, you’ll find everything you need to rest, reset, and revamp! There are also outstanding restaurant options to satisfy any craving, especially if any of your party members are getting a big hangry.

Since you’re already making yourself at home, you may as well go the extra step and spend the night! Drop by any of the Chilliwack accommodations, and you’ll find a cozy spot to curl up.

3. Just Up the Road to Harrison River Valley

There’s always something happening in Harrison!

The locals here have their pick of fun ways to take in the scenery, and your family has a standing invitation to join in. Sasquatch Mountain Resort is a wonderful option for all levels of nature seekers. Disc golf, hiking, and mountain biking are just the start of ways to fill your itinerary.

The nearby Harrison Lake is a hub of activity, too! The tree-lined shore is full of points of interest to investigate, and you can all take to the water via kayak, power boat or canoe, by guided tour or with you leading the tour (get your dad jokes ready). Finding everything you need is easy with lakeside options like Killer’s Cove Boat Rentals, Harrison Eco Tours and Shoreline Tours.

There’s even a giant inflatable water park to play on! Harrison Watersports has one of the most fun ways to keep cool through the summer, with a floating obstacle course/playground.
