Earthwise Agassiz is hosting our very first Seedy Saturday event on March 29, from 10 AM to 2 PM! Whether you’re an avid gardener or just starting out, this is a great chance to connect with your community, exchange seeds, and share gardening tips. Bring your extra seeds and swap with fellow garden enthusiasts, or simply come to learn something new.

While you are here, do not miss your opportunity to participate in one of our fantastic workshops! These are free to attend, but registration is strongly recommended. To register for the workshops please, contact Rhea at agassizoutreach@earthwisesociety.bc.ca. Drop-in participants are welcome, as long as space and supplies are available.

10:30-11:30am: Introduction to Permaculture
What is permaculture? Is it just the latest gardening fad or (as its name suggests) is it here to stay? Join Earthwise Community Farmer, Mark McLaughlin and discover how this holistic approach can help you save time, money, and energy, grow food in a changing climate, and support local biodiversity. Learn some simple permacultural techniques from one of our local regenerative farms to try out in your own garden this season!

12:00-1:00pm Container gardening with Simone McNally (family-friendly)
Discover how you can grow delicious vegetables, fragrant herbs, and beautiful flowers in just one small container! Local gardener Simone McNally will show you how to choose the right plants, soil, and location for your container garden. She’ll also share some tips and tricks that will help you care for your tiny garden for seasons to come. Families will get to take home a small planter box planted with seeds of their choice at the end of this workshop.

12:30-2:00pm Garden microbiology with Harini S. Aiyer
Join Harini S. Aiyer, Soil Science PhD candidate in the Faculty of Land and Food System at UBC, for a fascinating (and very accessible) introduction to the microscopic world in our own backyards. Dig into the topic of soil biodiversity and learn more about the complex microbiome that allows plant life to thrive. Gain a better understanding of the diseases that affect common garden vegetables, and how a knowledge of their biological bases can help us manage them.

If you’d like to participate in the seed swap, here are some helpful tips:
1. Bring Seeds – Bring open-pollinated, heirloom, or organic seeds if possible. No invasive species, please! Whether you have a few seeds or hundreds to share, anything is welcome and appreciated!
2. Label Clearly – If you have saved the seeds yourself, be sure to include the plant name, variety, year, and any special growing tips on the package.
3. Remember to bring some envelopes to take some seeds home!
4. Take Seeds and Be Considerate – You do not have to bring seeds to take some, but sharing is encouraged! Take only what you need so everyone gets a chance to participate.
