This story begins in Paris in 1839, where we meet Marie Cappelle, an orphaned young woman who goes to live with her Aunt Louise, Madame Garat. We will witness her childhood friendship with Georgette Nicolaise, but Georgette soon gets wed to the Marquis de Fontain and their friendship becomes distant. Eventually Marie is offered a hand in marriage to Charles Lafarge, the master of Chateau Glandiers and an Iron Foundry in the Province of Provence. They relocate to their new home where we meet his family and watch the unfolding of their short marriage which ends in tragedy.
